YouTube has expanded its deepfake removal programme to allow celebrities and public figures to request takedowns of AI-generated content featuring their likeness, extending protections beyond the platform’s existing first-person reporting mechanism launched in March 2024.

Previously, only those depicted in deepfakes could file removal requests through YouTube’s privacy complaint process. Unlike those platforms, YouTube’s approach centres on reactive removal rather than proactive labelling, placing the burden on affected parties to identify violations.

Industry observers note the policy creates asymmetric protections favouring those with resources to monitor and report violations. Smaller public figures without dedicated legal teams may struggle to utilise the system effectively, whilst celebrities with substantial management infrastructure gain enhanced control over their digital presence.

The expansion also raises questions about YouTube’s capacity to process increased request volumes. The platform has not disclosed staffing levels for its content review operations or typical response times for deepfake complaints.
